Auburndale, Fla. – The University of Chicago softball team beat Defiance College 5-3 before losing 9-1 to Babson College on Thursday in Florida.
The Maroons ran their record to 4–4.
UChicago 5, Defiance 3
UChicago struck right away in the top of the first inning. Layla Sims drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on an error to make it 1–0. Claire Fortier tripled and scored later in the frame Olivia CataldoUnmarried of
Fortier provided an RBI single up the middle in the top of the third, and the score was tied 3–3 heading into the fourth inning. The Maroons got the go-ahead run in the fourth and an insurance tally in the fifth. anna jensen An RBI single knocked in and Cataldo posted an RBI groundout.
Defiance put two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth. but the pitcher delaney choi struck out the next two batters to end the threat. When the Maroons got into another potential jam in the bottom of the seventh, Paige Hefke Entered the game and struck out the last two hitters while swinging for the save.
UChicago posted 10 hits, two errors, and three stolen bases. Fortier batted 3-for-4 and Nicole Wong went 2-for-4.
starting pitcher delaney romanchik Gave up three runs in three innings. Choi (2–0 record) earned the win with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, which included five strikeouts.
Babson 9, UChicago 1 (5 innings)
The Beavers scored six runs in the top of the second and ran away with three games to two in the top of the fourth. The contest ended after five innings.
Julia Focal The bottom of the third provided the lone Maroon run with an RBI single to right center.
Sims accounted for three of the team’s five stolen bases that day.
Hefke (2–2 record) took the loss while striking out nine in five innings of work.
