UChicago baseball secures MWC tournament berth with doubleheader split at Lawrence

Appleton, Wis. , drew bryanA dominant performance on the mound led the University of Chicago baseball team to a 1-0 win in the first game of a doubleheader at Lawrence University on Saturday.

The Maroons moved their record overall to 23–16 (14–9 MWC), clinching the No. 3 seed in the following week’s Midwest Conference tournament. The Vikings went 15–21 (10–13 MWC).


Game One – UChicago 1, Lawrence 0

Bryan threw another gem, running his scoreless streak to 17.2-consecutive innings. The fireballer righty struck out 15 batters in 7.2 innings of work, matching his season high that he set on April 7 against Illinois College. Overall, the junior struck out 54 percent of batters he faced.

Two starting pitches went scoreless in the first six innings. Bryan went on a hitting streak, retiring 15 of 16 batters in that time.

UChicago was able to score a run in the top of the seventh. Two singles and an error put runners in the corner. brayden jirovec, Rookie outfielder throws down a squeeze bunt to score jack sharp from third base.

That was all the run support the visitors would need. brian and close Phil Hogan Combined for 17 strikeouts in nine innings, Hogan earned his second save of the year. The game quickly finished in an hour and 40 minutes.

UChicago totaled five hits and one error. Jonathan Zeevi Batted 2-for-4.


Game Two – Lawrence 9, UChicago 0

The Vikings were struck out for seven runs between the seventh and eighth innings in the night cap, putting the game out of reach. UChicago struggled at the plate, allowing only five total hits while committing three errors.
