In a video after she shot to stardom, she said she struggled “all her life” but was inspired by her family and faith.
‘I come from a small town called Sand Hill, Mississippi. Where I come from, we shouldn’t be successful. It has been a struggle since day one. My birth mother placed me in foster care when I was two years old.
‘My whole life has been a struggle. That’s great to hear, it’s something I’ve always dreamed of. It’s polite. I’ve been through a lot and I haven’t let anything defeat me yet.
‘I am a champion in that sense, not just on the track. I want to be up there with Naomi Campbell, taking over the runway and not just the sport.
‘We are blessed when we wake up and we get a new day to do something different. I feel every day is a celebration for me.
