Memorial run held in honor of slain OPP constable. Greg Pierzchala

Family, friends and police from across the province paid tribute to the fallen officer in his hometown of Barrie, Ontario. on Saturday.

OPP Cast. Fans of Greg Pierzchala organized an inaugural memorial race in his honor.

“He may have been our brother, a son, but he was also an excellent student, a friend, a cousin and a police constable,” said Greg’s sister Justina Pirzchala. “Greg definitely loved his job and everything that came with it.”

Saturday’s run comes just days after Sgt. Eric Mueller was shot and killed in the line of duty outside Ottawa. Two other officers were seriously injured. Runners participating in the Memorial Run passed a Canadian flag that was lowered in honor of Sgt. Mueller.

The commissioner of the OPP was on the run and it has been a sad year for policing.

“Of the nine police officers killed across this country since September, five of them have been right here in our county,” said Commissioner Thomas Carrick. “This has to end, and today is the day of a new beginning. Today is an opportunity to celebrate our police officers.”

Pirzchla was shot and killed in the line of duty on December 27 near Hagersville, Ont.

Funds raised from the run will be used to establish a scholarship for a student at St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School, where Gregg once attended.
