The springtime extravaganza always draws a huge crowd—170,000 to capacity—for Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The crowd of spectators includes some of the biggest personalities from the worlds of sport, music, television and entertainment. All come to see which horse will pull away a winner – and which lucky bettor makes the right call.
The two-week-long festivities culminate in the Kentucky Derby, which takes place on the first Saturday of May. The race, one of many taking place today, tests three-year-old purebred horses. Trainers, jockeys, and owners all hope that their horse will win and go on to complete the Triple Crown in horse racing: The Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes. There have been two Triple Crown winners in the past decade – American Pharoah in 2015, and Justify in 2018.
