Chinese tech company Baidu announced Monday that it may sell some robotaxi rides without any human personnel in the vehicles.

The move eliminates labor costs for operating self-driving taxis – up to the permitted number of cars.
The government approval initially covers 10 vehicles in the Beijing suburb of Yizhuang, which is home to several corporations such as JD.com.
Baidu’s robotaxi is the primary site for public street testing and operation in the city of suburban Beijing. In November 2021, local authorities Baidu and rival robotaxi operator Pony.ai allowed to charge fares for a ride.
Public transport users can book heavily subsidized robotaxi rides through the companies’ apps.
