The United States Geological Survey said a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Tonga.
The USGS said the quake occurred at 4 a.m. NZT, with its epicenter about 95 km west-northwest of Hihifo, Tonga.
It was at a depth of 210 km.
The US Tsunami Warning System stated that there was no tsunami warning after the earthquake.

The earthquake was followed by a magnitude 5.1 aftershock at 4.30am NZT.
Hihifo is the main village on Niuotoputapu Island, north of the Tonga main island group.
Earthquake tremors were felt in American Samoa. A reporter for Tualauta County said the tremors lasted at least a minute or two.
